A Safe Harbor in Tumultuous Times

An anchor is a heavy object that goes down into the water and holds a ship in place, so that it doesn’t drift away.

For many today, they feel their lives are like a boat cut loose from its anchor, adrift in the dark, restless, chaotic sea.  Uncertainty abounds in our world.  People are anxious.  Monthly payments are on the minds of many; so are jobs and economic security.  And our world, more than ever, seems to be an unsafe place to live.

Recently I attended a celebration.  There was lots of laughter, fun and food. I couldn’t help but sense that, for many, this was a temporary relief of worry and gnawing uncertainty.   The MC encouraged everyone to eat, drink and be merry.  We don’t know about tomorrow.   Enjoy today. Enjoy now.  It’s like an anesthetic which induces numbness to the pain, at least for the short term.

Soon the numbness leaves and the same old questions bubble in the restless, anxious heart: who am I?  Where did I come from anyway?  Where am I going?  Why am I here?  You feel like a ship tossed here and there in the dark abyss?

Do you feel like that?   People are asking, ‘where do I find hope?”  And this question we should not be ashamed to ask!  Recently a twenty-two year old girl, a stranger to both my wife and I, called and asked, “May I come and talk?  I need hope.”  It’s important to ask and it’s more important to know there is an answer.    We must turn to the One who made us, the seas and all things.

God is so good to tell us.  He tells us in the Bible from where we come, why we are here, and where we are going.  These fundamental questions He answers and we may know these answers with certainty.  In short, God made us to be anchored in Him, but in our sin and rebellion, we wanted to break away from Him. This explains the darkness, confusion, chaos and the feeling of uncertainty. The way back is through Christ. He is the anchor.  The Bible says, “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast…”

This is the hope of the good news so briefly stated.  So much more of this hope can be shared over a cup of chaii or coffee.  With Christ as anchor, there is true hope. There is certainty and safety.  In Him, you know where you are going!
