Sound old fashioned? ‘Mom as homemaker’ often has negative associations, even prompting derogatory memes like ‘barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen.’ At least that’s the ugly spin many put on it.
“Do you work?” someone asks a homemaker. What should she say? The assumption is that you only work if you get paid. I recall one stay-at-home mom responding, “Yes, I’m a domestic engineer.” A wonderful response! A homemaker includes so many priceless tasks.
The urban dictionary defines homemaker as:
“A person, usually a woman, who cares for her own home and family by cleaning, cooking nutritious meals, doing laundry, running errands, caring for pets, working with a budget, organizing, etc. She is her own boss and enjoys the freedom of creating her own schedule.”
Janet Quinlan in her article, “What is a homemaker and why it matters” adds, “While that definition describes things I do, it doesn’t define who I am as a homemaker. I’m not merely the housekeeper or cleaning lady. I am the maker of my home” (emphasis mine).
For a wife and a mom, being a homemaker is a special calling from God. It should be a most prized calling; special in its own right. A wife is a helper and friend to her husband and a mom, a caregiver to her children. She is with her children and there for them. Her calling is to create a home environment that is loving, nurturing, peaceful, orderly, educational, and joyful. She is the ‘maker of their home.’
With wives and moms joining the workforce there are so many more stresses. How then do you make a house into a home? Even doctors will say many women have health issues because they are in stressful work situations. They are more vulnerable and, at times, unprotected in workplace environments.
True, one’s situation may necessitate both husband and wife to join the workforce, but is it the ideal for the home and the marriage relationship?
God created both man and woman equal, but God created each differently. The Bible exalts the calling and position of wife and mom. The Bible says, “She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”
In Christ, God makes the maker of the home a beautiful and high position again, filling it with purpose and delight!
