In What Is Your Worth?

Is it found in money? Or in a good job? But suppose you don’t have money, status or a job; does that mean you have no worth?
In what is your worth? Where is it found? Some say it’s found in what you do, in your status or things you possess.
But it’s found in who you are, in the fact that God made you in HIs image, in His likeness. The Holy Bible says that “God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27).
Yes, because of sin and disobedience, this image is broken. But man is not an animal. He is like God in that he can still relate, love, think, communicate, and reason. To murder a person is to destroy an image-bearer of God.
I meet people who say, “I’m very old now. I’m not worth much anymore” or “I am severely disabled, what is my worth?”
When a society loses the teaching of ‘the image of God’, sadly, it ends up with sinful practices like medical assistance in dying (MAID), aborting babies at will, and high suicide rates. Worth, then, is based only on ‘quality of life’ as a society perceives or defines it. In our brokenness, we’ve lost the teaching of the dignity of every person.
Human rights for the very young, the aged and the disabled truly flourish in a society where we acknowledge that God made each person in His image, male and female.
The hope is even greater. Jesus died for broken image bearers in order to renew their image in God’s likeness. By His Spirit, the risen Lord Jesus begins to renew the broken image.
How lovely to see the joy, then, of a 95-year-old gentleman as grandchildren gather around him and gain from his years of wisdom, or of a Down Syndrome child who willingly and affectionately serves others all her years, or one whom some deem a ‘vegetable’, receives so much love and has so much to teach us.
Even in their sad conditions, they know God’s love in Christ. They know God has a meaningful purpose and plan for them on earth till the natural end of life.
No, I’m not a mere burden to society. I’m made in God’s image and God remakes me in Christ into one of God’s children forever! That changes perspective!
